Blog post: English - Kafka Blog post

A) Consider what his relationships with the following women may reflect on kafka as a feminist voice:

Felice Bauer (18 November 1887 – 15 October 1960): Kafka met this lady when he visited his friend house, which he felt some kind of ambiguous attraction when he saw her.Kafka dated with Felice for 5 years (Kafka met this woman 1912~1917, and there were total 2 engagements by Kafka with the use of letters). Their relationship ended because Kafka started to suffer from tuberculosis. Her family was poor, which made Felice to be the main source of income.

Milena Jesenka (10 August 1896 – 17 May 1944): Milena, is a Czech writer, editor, journalist and takes a role as translator in the main context. Her family was very poor that she had to make additional income by becoming translator. In 1919 she discovered Kafka's short story (The Stoker), which she was attracted to translate it. This allowed their intense relationship to be started with the passionate letter responses, however, they eventually broke up since Milena could not leave her husband.

Grete Bloch (March 21 1892 - May 1944): Unexpectedly, she was also primary source of her family. She was a longtime friend with Felice Bauer, which she met her in 1913, April. She met Kafka in 1913, October. She got to know about the relationship between Feliece Kafka. As a matter of fact, she continuously attempted to mitigate the uncomfortable atmosphere between them as she saw that the first engagement has failed by Kafka. She took a role as mediator between two people, whom the relationship was quite skeptical and unreliable.

B) Kafka's intense attraction to women but clear aversion to physical contact and sex has long been a subject for a discussion. Theories on his possible asexuality or repressed homosexuality contributed to the mythology around the author. How might it inform your interpretation of his text?
Kafka had several unsuccessful relationships with women, he couldn't marry or raise a family, as he was tormented by the strength of his sex drive, which made him constantly turn to brothels and pornography. Subjectively, the journey should have led him to express his repressed opinions about his understanding of relationships in his novels, which often turned out to be sometimes incestuous, asexual. This could be seen as negative determinant for Franz Kafka, however, he describes sex as self-alienation, which he could fell into the addiction. He had a lot of fantasies about different form of sexuality that the scholars nowadays reason where his extravagant source of understanding of his novel came from.
