Blog post: Maslow's hierarchy of needs in Frankenstein
Hello! In this week's literature class, I and my group were necessary to discuss how Victor Frankenstein and his creation are satisfied/unsatisfied in the novel for your assigned hierarchical need. We were assigned to do Love and Belonging.
Let's begin!
Victor Frankenstein
Quote:
“Her countenance expressed affection even in death. I need not describe the feelings of those whose dearest ties are rent by that most irreparable evil, the void that presents itself to the soul and the despair that is exhibited on the countenance (Chapter 3, pg. 40)
Paragraph:
When Victor’s mother passed away, Victor feels a sense of loss of belonging and like a piece of him has been destroyed, as someone he loved passed away. Through this situation the love Victor has for his mother is expressed and his capabilities of feeling emotion is highlighter. “Her countenance expressed affection even in death. I need not describe the feelings of those whose dearest ties are rent by that most irreparable evil, the void that presents itself to the soul and the despair that is exhibited on the countenance.” from chapter 30, page 40.
Frankenstein’s Creation
Quotes:
“Shall each man find a wife for his bosom and each beast has his mate and I be alone?” (pg. 128)
“You must create a female for me with whom I can live in the interchange of those sympathies necessary for my being.” (Chapter 17. Pg. 174)
“My heart was fashioned to be susceptible of love and sympathy and when wrenched by misery to vice and hatred, it did not endure the violence of the change without torture such as you cannot even imagine.” (pg. 272)
“If I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear; and chiefly towards you my arch-enemy, because my creator, do I swear inextinguishable hatred.” (Chapter 17)
Paragraph:
The creature possess the emotion of love and wants belonging especially in the form of a partner as he requests Victor to create him a partner. To support this a quote from the text, “You must create a female for me with whom I can live in the interchange of those sympathies necessary for my being.” from Chapter 17, page 174. Another section that can be analyzed in terms of love and belonging with relation to the creature would be when Victor refuses to create a partner for him and he expresses his loneliness and lack of life and willfulness for a partner. A quote to support this would be “Shall each man find a wife for his bosom and each beast has his mate and I be alone?” from page 128. There are also times when even though the creation knows he is susceptible to love and possesses this feeling he doesn’t have the ability to use it or portray it the way he wants to and therefore resorts to violence due to the lack of love and belonging he feels. Two quotes from the text further support this, “My heart was fashioned to be susceptible of love and sympathy and when wrenched by misery to vice and hatred, it did not endure the violence of the change without torture such as you cannot imagine.” pg. 272, and “If I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear; and chiefly towards you my arch-enemy, because my creator, do I swear inextinguishable hatred.” from chapter 17.
